Organic barley grass (Hordeum vulgare L.) belongs to the sweet grass family, and the first cultivation by humans probably dates back to about 10,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, the “land of two rivers” between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers.
From that point in time, barley grass has always played an important role in human nutrition. Historical sources report its cultivation both by the ancient Egyptians and later by the Sumerians and Babylonians. In ancient China, barley grass was considered a sacred plant as early as 5,000 years ago. At Ogaenics we use only barley grass in organic quality.
What active ingredients does barley grass contain?
Organic barley grass surprises with a high protein content of 20-25%, which is composed of all 8 essential amino acids. These are the protein building blocks that the human body cannot produce itself and that are needed for the formation of new tissue.
But barley grass also contains a wealth of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. These include iron, beta-carotene, vitamin K, vitamin B2, calcium, zinc and potassium. Barley grass is therefore particularly suitable for vegetarians, vegans or people with increased nutritional needs.
Where does the organic barley grass used for Ogaenics grow?
The organic barley grass used in Ogaenics grows in Germany and Hungary under certified organic cultivation. Instead of using harmful chemicals, practices such as composting, crop rotation and intercropping are used to control weeds and pests as well as providing valuable nutrients to the soil. No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are used.
Our organic barley grass seed begins to germinates after about 6-9 days. Leaf development then takes place and the main root begins to sprout and take up nutrients. With exposure to sunlight, the plant forms more leaves and begins to perform photosynthesis. At the end of this stage, barley grass has the highest nutrient content and tastes the sweetest. At this time, our organic barley grass is harvested.
How is Ogaenics organic barley grass powder being made?
After harvesting, the organic barley grass is gently dried to preserve all nutrients, enzymes and secondary plant compounds. This is followed by gentle further processing into powder. The barley grass powder used by Ogaenics is of raw food quality.
