The study was conducted as a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial and investigated the photoprotective effects of a specific melon extract in healthy adults. The aim was to evaluate the ability of the melon extract to protect the skin from UV-induced damage.
What that means:
- Randomized: Participants were randomly allocated to the melon extract and placebo groups.
- Placebo-controlled: There was a comparison group that received an inactive placebo in order to be able to objectively evaluate the results.
- Double-blind: Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who received the melon extract and who received the placebo in order to avoid bias.
The clinical study found that both oral ingestion and topical application of the melon extract increased the minimum erythema dose (MED), indicating an increased UV tolerance of the skin. In addition, an in vitro study on human skin explants showed that melon extract increased the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, reduced the number of sunburn cells caused by UV radiation and decreased the melanin content in irradiated skin. These results suggest that the administration of melon extract, both orally and topically, may be an effective strategy to protect the skin from UV damage due to its antioxidant properties
