Keranat-for-hair-loss-scientific-studies

What do scientific studies really show about hair loss, hair growth, and hair quality?

More hair in your brush, in the shower drain, or a ponytail that looks thinner: hair loss can be unsettling. If you want to support your hair from within with supplements, you’ll look for ingredients whose effects have been studied in a way you can actually follow.

One such ingredient is Keranat™. It is a patented miliacin (triterpene) encapsulated with polar lipids and obtained from organic millet seeds, organic sunflower seed oil, organic wheat extract, and organic rosemary leaf extract.

Where does the millet for our plant complex come from? Learn more about the origin and processing of our organic millet.

Research looks both at its effects at the hair follicle and at taking it as a dietary supplement in women with a specific form of diffuse hair loss known as telogen effluvium.

Studies have examined how taking it may help with hair loss, how it can support hair quality from within, and which processes at the hair root could explain these effects.

We take a closer look at the studies and explain what their results mean.

STUDY 1:

Keophiphath et al. (2020). Miliacin encapsulated by polar lipids stimulates cell proliferation in hair bulb and improves telogen effluvium in women. Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

How was the study conducted?

65 premenopausal women with telogen effluvium, a form of diffuse hair loss, took part in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. For twelve weeks, they received 300 mg daily of the miliacin–polar lipid complex Keranat™ as a dietary supplement or a placebo.

What effects were investigated?

Photographic measurements recorded hair density in the growth and resting phases. In addition, the investigators assessed scalp dryness and hair shine after 12 weeks of continuous supplementation.

What was found?

Fewer hairs in the resting phase: Under the active ingredient Keranat™, the density of hairs in the resting phase fell by around 49% compared to baseline; under placebo, by around 38%. The decrease was statistically significantly greater in the active group. Keranjat™ is therefore of interest to researchers as an effective dietary supplement for use in hair loss.

Improved hair shine and less scalp dryness: Both features improved more in the Keranat™ group than under placebo.

In brief: How Keranat™ targets the hair root

At the base of the hair root is the dermal papilla. It supplies the hair-forming cells and releases growth factors such as IGF-1, which influence cell division and the hair cycle.

In laboratory tests on human hair follicles, the combination of miliacin and polar lipids used in Keranat™ increased IGF-1 release and promoted the renewal of hair-forming cells. This offers a possible explanation for how Keranat™ could support hair health from within.

STUDY 2:

Boisnic et al. (2016). Miliacin Associated with Polar Lipids: Effect on Growth Factors Excretion and Extracellular Matrix of the Dermal Papilla Hair Follicle Model Maintained in Survival Conditions. Hair Therapy & Transplantation; 6:143.

How was the study conducted?

The researchers’ key question was: How might Keranat™ act directly at the hair root? To investigate this, they cultured human hair follicles outside the body for seven days under conditions that kept the tissue viable and studied the effects of Keranat™.

What effects were investigated?

The research focused on the release of the growth factors IGF-1 and KGF, cell division in the hair bulb, and the collagen fibers of the supporting tissue around the hair follicle.

What was found?

Stimulation of the growth factor IGF-1: Keranat™ stimulated the production of IGF-1. This messenger substance is involved in regulating cell growth and influences it positively.

Renewal of hair-forming cells: The researchers observed increased renewal of keratinocytes in the hair bulb—the cells from which hair is formed, i.e., hair growth.

Changes in the supporting tissue: In addition, the thickness of the extracellular matrix in the connective tissue sheaths increased. This matrix consists of collagen fibers that anchor the hair root more firmly in the scalp, contributing to reduced hair loss and stronger hair.

Conclusion: Keranat™ as plant-based support for hair loss

Keranat™ shows potential to support women with telogen effluvium—a form of diffuse hair loss—as a dietary supplement. In a twelve-week clinical study, the density of hairs in the resting phase decreased more than with placebo. Hair shine and scalp dryness also improved.

The results point to Keranat™’s potential for this form of hair loss. For us at Ogaenics, the two belong together: natural ingredients with a scientific basis and a clear, understandable assessment of what they can do.

Frequently asked questions about Keranat™ and hair loss

Keranat™ is a patented plant-based ingredient for dietary supplements to support hair health. The studied combination contains miliacin from millet and polar lipids from wheat.

A twelve-week study in women with telogen effluvium provides indications. Under the active ingredient, the density of hairs in the resting phase decreased more than under placebo. However, the results cannot be applied to every form of hair loss.

Laboratory tests show increased activity of hair-forming cells. This explains a possible mechanism of action. In the clinical study, however, there was no significant difference versus placebo in the density of actively growing hairs. Faster hair growth is therefore not clearly proven.

The clinical study examined intake over twelve weeks. After this period, differences versus placebo were seen in resting-phase density, hair shine, and scalp dryness.

If your hair loss changes throughout the year, it’s worth looking at seasonal influences. In our article on hair loss in summer, we also explain the difference between hair loss and hair breakage.
